Ms. Dipti Lunawat, SCMS Cochin School of Business, clears misconceptions about Finance and talks about the opportunities it presents young management professionals

Ms. Dipti Lunawat
Ms. Dipti Lunawat
A Chartered Accountant by profession, Ms. Dipti Lunawat has gathered valuable industry experience, having worked with some of the top names in the field of consultancy. But, she admits that she was always interested in teaching, and that it was definitely her true calling. She already embraced teaching during her articleship as a CA, but her first B School assignment with SCMS Cochin School of Business is what has gotten her really excited. Here, the Assistant Professor talks about her forte: finance and how things are changing for those who want to make it big in the industry.

For starters, Ms. Lunawat believes that students who do their management programs from reputable B Schools definitely have an advantage. According to her, this is due to their ability to keep up with changing trends: “Firstly, they are more aware about current affairs. As a B School student, you will be updated about the latest trends in the industry. There is also a lot more focus, which in my opinion is appealing to the industry. Yes, there might be some issues with the fundamentals of Finance but that’s where my or any teacher’s role comes in play”.

However, Ms. Lunawat has words of encouragement for students who might be intimidated by the thought of the high-level of number-crunching involved in Finance. She believes it’s more of a mind game and there’s no reason for beginners to develop a phobia about it because there are means like computers, calculators, etc., to offer them respite. “Irrespective of your background, you can excel in Finance if you develop an interest in it”, she says. “At the end of the day, Finance is about analyzing different situations and how you focus on solving problems”.

Ms. Lunawat is also of the opinion that a specialization at the PGDM level is important because it lets budding professionals express themselves in their areas of interest. It could be finance for some, while for others it’s the dream of becoming an entrepreneur. The good news is that the institute strives to prepare them according to their interests. “It’s true that many of my students want to become entrepreneurs”, she states. “I give them projects and ask students to ponder the issues in them. They can then apply all the concepts they have learned to come up with effective solutions”.

Ask her about an important aspect of learning for students at the institute, and Ms. Lunawat replies without batting an eyelid: “During the two years of their program, students have to work with deadlines constantly and that’s the best thing they learn. That’s because when you look at professionals in the corporate world, many of them struggle to keep up with deadlines. The mentorship program at the institute is also beneficial to students because they can find out ways to deal with the challenges that they might face.”

The mentorship program is taken very seriously by the faculty members who devote their time every evening to answer student queries. Ms. Lunawat encourages students to make the most out of this program and other opportunities offered by the institute. “SCMS Cochin is a great place to learn things because the institute tries very hard to equip you with all the skills required to make your place in the corporate world”, she says. “The two years’ residential program also lets you develop your personality and grow as an individual”.

Funding options for MBA in Kerala

MBA in Kerala is a dream of many out there. The moment you get your acceptance letter for pursuing MBA in Cochin, the question which pours worries over the head is the arrangement of finance for pursuing the same course. Have a look at the following funding options through which you can fund your MBA:

     Q     Scholarships
The scholarships are one of the greatest source of funding the cost of pursuing MBA. There may be a case that you need to submit a separate application for availing the benefit of your scholarship in your fee structure. There are a number of scholarships given by both the State and the Central Government. So, you need to work hard so that the benefit of the scholarship is with you.

     Q     Sponsorships
There are a number of companies which offer company sponsorships to the students who are pursuing MBA. The word of caution here is that you need to read the document very carefully, before accepting the offer as there may be the case that these companies may bind the prospective students with the clause of it being compulsory for the students to join their company once they complete the course. Breaking such contract at a later stage may bring loads of trouble for you.

     Q     Savings
Savings though belong purely to you, but there always come little more precautions when you wish to touch that part of your bank balance which you have saved for certain unforeseen events. Also, if you have maintained certain deposits, you need to break them and fund for your education.

     Q     Loans
There is no dearth of availability of education loans these days. You simply need to visit a bank, give your documents which include the prospectus of the college where the banker can get the course details as well as fee details. The applicant needs to pay back the loan once the course comes to an end and he/she starts earning, till then there is no requirement to pay the principal or interest.

Climbing steadily in the Super League of Indian B- Schools, SCMS Cochin is all set to lead from the front

MBA Colleges in India

SCMS Cochin has done itself proud by making a place for itself amongst top B Schools in the country in the recent Go-Getter and collegecampus2corporate.com All India B School Survey 2014. There are a few names that often make it to the top of the prestigious surveys like this one, year after year. But SCMS Cochin has managed to break their stranglehold this year. In fact it has gone on to do exceptionally well in some of the crucial categories that were taken into account during the survey.

The Go-Getter and collegecampus2corporate.com survey is a participatory and perceptual one that took into account more than 150 management institutes in the country that had minimum two batches graduating before 2013. After thorough authentication, 65 institutes were ranked based on various factors including infrastructure, placement, faculty, research and writing, curriculum and pedagogy, global exposure, industry interface, entrepreneurship and more. It was interesting to see the survey come up with unexpected results.

The Go-Getter and collegecampus2corporate.com survey grouped the institutes into different leagues based on their performance in various categories. The Super League was the highest category followed by A+++, A++ and so on. Based on its overall performance in the survey, SCMS Cochin made it to the Super League of management institutes in the country. Thus today it finds its place amongst the heavyweights of management education in India and you can only imagine that it’s the decades of effort that has paid off.

The institute has always considered its faculty members as its pillars and this is one category where it has ranked in the top five. This particular ranking category took into account the faculty strength of a B School and the association of the head of departments with the corporate world and foreign universities.

Faculty members of an institute are also involved in Research and Writing Category that ranked B Schools based on the priority they give to publication of papers and books. SCMS Cochin was ranked 5th in the category. With senior academicians like Dr. V. Raman Nair, Prof. K.J. Paulose, Dr. Filomina P. George, Dr. C. K. Rajan, Dr. C. Sengottuvelu, etc. SCMS Cochin has been very discreetly building its faculty pool since years now.

The institute did brilliantly in the Curriculum and Pedagogy category too as it was ranked amongst the top five B Schools in the country once again. The high rank in the category talks about SCMS Cochin’s readiness to adapt its curriculum according to the changing needs of the industry and using evolving pedagogy to offer the best to students. Throughout its programs, the institute focuses on case studies, Industry Institute Interface sessions with renowned names to ensure that the students get practical experience and exposure to the industry.

SCMS Cochin is already considered to be a top management school in Kerala and it has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 1976. But its success in the recent survey is quite startling and speaks volumes of the giant strides the management institute has managed to take in recent times. It’s a reflection on several of the initiatives carried out by the institute on a regular basis, which ensure that it keeps up with its mission of offering cutting edge management education to students.

Mr. Biju Dominic, CEO FinalMile Consulting delves into the “power of the human mind” during his talk at SCMS Cochin School of Business

“Endeavor: Entrepreneurial Insights”, the workshop held by SCMS Cochin on 10th March, 2014 brought together an interesting mix of entrepreneurs who offered students a look into their visionary minds. The idea was to encourage future entrepreneurs to follow their dreams and chart their own path to success. The contribution of Mr. Biju Dominic, CEO FinalMile Consulting, was especially important for those in the audience.

Mr. Dominic is not your regular entrepreneur. He has an interesting line of work, with previous experience in behavioural architecture and cognitive neuroscience, in particular. He shed light on how he developed a passion for his work and turned it into a flourishing business. This helped students broaden their scope when it comes to business ideas, which can stem from their individual interests and be used to set up new enterprises.

For Mr. Dominic, it was his deep passion for understanding the complex human psyche that formed the germ of his business idea. “Human behaviour can be found in every aspect of human activity: politics, advertising, sports,” he tells us. “I began to explore it further and turned it into an entrepreneurial proposition.” He added that it was his passion that made him believe that he could change the world.

To encourage the students in the gathering to go after their dreams and aspirations, he said, “You need to have faith in yourself. Have a fair idea of the context of the entrepreneurial project you have in mind as you start. It’s also important to have the freedom to pursue the context and the idea.” He also offered a way to make that happen: by associating oneself to an MNC. He also urged students to bear in mind the importance of finances, both in the best and worst-case scenarios.

His practical advice was well received by the audience that was quite keen on learning from the experiences of the renowned entrepreneur. And he did not disappoint as he talked about his rewarding career at Reliance Industries. Mr. Dominic himself had his own massive learning experience through the inspiring tales of the Ambanis and he was more than willing to share them with the gathering.

To make any entrepreneurial venture successful, the importance of having the right team to work with cannot be overemphasized. It’s a point Mr. Dominic focussed on as his talk drew to an end. “You need to work with people who share the same ideas and values. It is the glue that had the power to keep a group bound together,” he stressed. Probably just as effectively as the man with the passion for human psyche had kept the audience bound to their seats through his talk.
